Even though he has declared a state of emergency in Tennessee due to the Alabama pipeline incident, Gov. Bill Haslam is telling residents to continue with their “daily fuel purchases and driving patterns.” The governor has waived federal hours of service requirements for fuel transporters to prevent any disruptions to the state’s fuel supply. This means that truckers can work longer hours to transport fuel to gas stations. In a press release, the governor said “This is a precautionary measure as we are not currently seeing any widespread unavailability of petroleum in Tennessee. “ Friday, a fuel pipeline in Helena, AL burst leaking over 6000 barrels of fuel. The pipeline was connected to several southern states, including Tennessee. Consumers have already begun to see gas prices climb due to the problem. The average price in Tennessee has risen about seven cents to $2.08. In Crossville an average price of a gallon of unleaded fuel is $1.88 while in Rockwood it’s $1.92. Price gouging laws are in effect during the emergency. Tennessee’s price gouging laws make it unlawful for individuals and businesses to charge unreasonable prices for essential goods and services including gasoline, food, ice, fuel, generators, lodging, storage space, and other necessities in direct response to a disaster regardless of whether that emergency occurred in Tennessee or elsewhere. The price gouging law makes it unlawful to charge a price that is grossly in excess of the price charged prior to the emergency.
