Tennessee Governor Bill Lee says counties with low COVID-19 counts could see reopening first when the time comes to do so.

“We haven’t made any decisions about how it is that we will stage this economic reopening specifically, but certainly geographic locations will be weighed as we develop that plan,” Governor Lee said.

Lee said a task force that’s been created to help launch a phased reopening of the state is just now starting to work. The task force will evaluate several factors that will play into how Tennessee may give the all-clear for various businesses to reopen.

In addition, Governor Lee said $2.3 billion in federal money from the CARES Act will be coming to the state on Friday. The governor said he’s created a watchdog group that includes legislative leaders and constitutional officers to oversee how the money is spent. The Stimulus Financial Accountability Group is comprised of members including Lt. Gov. Randy McNally and Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton. The group will steward the funds, following guidance from the federal government on how they should be spent.
