GWYN TO RESIGN AS TBI DIRECTOR LATER THIS YEAR

The director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says it’s time for him to move on. TBI Director Mark Gwyn, says he will step down June 1st, 2018. Though he didn’t explain his reasons for leaving, Gwyn’s announcement comes after a local state senator started asking questions about the TBI in May of 2017. In January, Director Gwyn testified before a legislative committee about a state comptroller’s office audit. That audit found TBI was over budget for four years, dipping into reserve funds. The bureau used that money to avoid layoffs and operational gaps due to budget cuts. Gwyn had also taken criticism for mistakes the agency made during the Holly Bobo investigation. In a statement, Gwyn says he felt like this was time for him and the bureau to move on. He says the search and selection for a new bureau head will begin well-ahead of his departure.
