It’s been quite the roller coaster ride with the weather in just the past four days.  Mild weather changing to severe storms with winds up to 60 miles per hour turning to severe winter weather overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Friday was a mild day with some cloud cover and temps in the 60’s. Then Saturday was almost summer-like – sunny skies and 72 – a record-breaking New Years Day beating the previous New Years Day record of 65.

Saturday afternoon the party was over – trouble was brewing with severe storms approaching. Rain began flooding the place – at times coming down so hard drivers had to pull off the road. Some parts of Cumberland County were hit hard by the strong winds.  The Vandever community had several trees blown down and some residents said it sounded like a tornado blew by.  No official word of a tornado from the National Weather Service has been issued.

And just as people were coming out of their safe place from the strong storms we had to seek shelter again…for warmth.  Temperatures dropped from 55 at noon Sunday to 27 by midnight with heavy snow falling everywhere.  The western part of Cumberland County reported up to 6 inches of snow on the ground by 5am.  Area schools that were scheduled to resume classes after the holiday break had to cancel classes due to snow.  Temperatures aren’t expected to get much higher than 30 for Monday but things will improve slightly as the week goes along – until Thursday when snow is expected to return and temperatures dropping even lower, possibly hitting 10 degrees overnight Thursday into Friday morning.
