HEAD-ON VEHICLE ACCIDENT IN PUTNAM COUNTY RESULTS IN ONE KILLED

A two vehicle accident in Putnam County yesterday claimed the life of a young woman. Trooper Phillip Murphy says a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle driven by 19-year-old Chantel Gomez of Baxter was traveling south on Burgess Falls Road near Rice Road when she crossed the center line and was hit by a 2000 International tractor-trailer operated by 53-year-old Lyle Taylor of Sparta. Gomez passed away from injuries sustained. Taylor was not hurt. Officers say Gomez was not restrained at the time of the accident.

Gomez attended and graduated from Upperman High School. Gomez was a soccer star at the school when she attended. The soccer team released a statement last night:

“It is with a heavy heart Upperman High School Soccer would like to express how heartbroken we all are over the loss of former player and very dear friend, Chantel Gomez. Even after graduation Chantel was one of Lady Bees Soccer’s biggest fans attending as many games as possible cheering on her sister and her former teammates. Our condolences are extended to her family and friends. We will be planning a special soccer memorial for Chantel in the near future and will keep our fans informed. She will be greatly missed by so many.”
