HIGH-SPEED PURSUIT ENDS WITH ARREST IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

A high-speed pursuit late Monday afternoon in Cumberland County ended with an arrest. Deputies observed a GMC SUV driven by 53-year-old Willis Lee Melton of Monterey on Dripping Springs Road reportedly going 60 miles per hour in a 45 zone. Officers tried to stop Melton but he allegedly turned onto Highway 62 and reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour. The chase went into Putnam County for a brief time then back into Cumberland County where it ended on a dirt trail at the end of George Branch Drive. Melton got into an altercation with officers before he was taken into custody for evading arrest, resisting arrest and driving on a revoked license. A female passenger was also arrested for a probation violation.
