HISTORICAL COMMISSION DELAYS CITY OF MEMPHIS FROM REMOVING CONFEDERATE STATUE
The debate continued in McMinn County Friday concerning whether or not Confederate statues should be displayed on city property. The Tennessee Historical Commission met in Athens with the group delaying a vote on whether the city of Memphis should remove the statue of General Nathan Bedford Forrest. The mayor of Memphis, Jim Strickland, also attended the meeting held at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum. The 29-member panel heard both sides of the debate. The Commission did approve a request to have an administrative law judge rule on whether the city even needs the state’s approval to take down the statue. Mayor Strickland stated that “if the city is allowed to legally remove the statue, it could happen as early as the end of November. At the same time, attorneys fighting for the right to keep the statue say that Friday’s determination was “a win for history.”
