HIT-AND-RUN ON MAIN STREET INVOLVED PREGNANT VICTIM
On Wednesday last week at 2144 hours, Officer John Karlsven arrived in the South Main Street area for a hit-and-run accident. The victim had pulled out of the roadway onto Wilson Lane. She told the officer she observed the vehicle behind her swerving significantly and was traveling at least partially in the turn lane at times.
She was not slowing in the traffic lane when she observed the vehicle speed up behind her and strike her vehicle. The vehicle then went around her vehicle. It was at that time she was able to see it was a green truck and that it turned onto South Gate Drive at a high rate of speed. The victim was pregnant at the time of this incident and was transported by EMS to Cumberland Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries.
While Officer Karlsven was still on the original accident scene, Officer Gunnels went to South Gate Drive to try and locate the vehicle that left.
He found a witness who said he “heard tires squealing” and he observed the truck speed down the road. He helped officer Gunnels locate the truck on South Gate Drive, where Officer Gunnels made contact with Caleb Hubbard at that residence.
Officer Karlsven arrived at the South Gate Drive residence as Officer Gunnels was detaining Mr. Hubbard due to his belligerent argumentative behavior. Karlsven advised Hubbard of his miranda rights which he said that he did not understand. When asked what he didn’t understand he advised and asked me that he had the right to talk. He did eventually say he understood them.
Mr. Hubbard was visibly intoxicated from his loud argumentative behavior and slurred speech. Mr. Hubbard claimed that he had been at the residence for hours watching tv.
He also said that the stream of transmission fluid on the roadway from the accident scene to the driveway was because his transmission had been leaking for some time and it finally “blew”.
He stated that it was an old truck and the significant front end damage was old.
During the investigation it was discovered that Mr. Hubbard was required to have an ignition interlock device installed. Officer Gunnels observed there was not one present in the vehicle.
Mr. Hubbard was arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and failure to comply with the interlock device requirement. He was also issued a summons for no insurance since I was unable to confirm if his vehicle was insured.
Mr. Hubbard was not charged with driving under the influence despite finding him shortly after the incident due to others at the residence confirming that Mr. Hubbard did consume alcohol once he arrived.
