HORSE DIES IN VEHICLE-TRAILER CRASH ON I-40 IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The Tennessee Highway Patrol and medics responded to a vehicle accident Friday on Interstate 40 in eastern Cumberland County.

Troopers say a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup pulling a trailer containing horses was heading east near the 336-mile marker.

The report states one of the left-side rear tires blew out after the Ford passed an automobile. The Ford overcorrected and left the interstate.

The Ford and the trailer overturned onto the left side and came to rest in a grassy area off the road.

The trailer contained five horses.

Troopers say four of the five horses survived the accident.

Upon inspection, the report states officers observed the truck tires were worn down to no tread. The trailer was not completely seated on the hitch.

The driver of the truck, 19-year-old Isabella Sky Howell, was injured in the crash.

The report states a passenger was not hurt.

Traffic heading eastbound at the scene was backed up for nearly seven miles at one point. The accident took several hours to clear.
