HOUSE SPEAKER SEXTON, OTHERS SUBPOENAED BY FEDERAL GRAND JURY TO TESTIFY
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Tennessee Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton says he is “fully cooperating” with authorities after being subpoenaed by a federal grand jury Tuesday.
The Speaker is among several lawmakers called to appear before a grandy jury. This comes weeks after former Tennessee Rep. Robin Smith resigned and pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud. At this time, it’s unclear if the subpoenas are related to allegations against Smith.
Speaker Sexton’s office released the following statement Tuesday: “We have been fully cooperating with the federal authorities since I became speaker in 2019. It is not unexpected that I and other members would be called to appear before a grand jury to provide factual statements as part of this ongoing investigation.”
