JUDGE SAYS FORMER PILOT/FLYING J PRESIDENT — USED “VILE” DESCRIPTIONS OF PEOPLE ON SECRET TAPES

A federal judge says that information has come to light that the former president of Pilot/Flying J ridiculed black people, women and the city of Cleveland in a series of tape recordings which he kept secret. The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that Judge Curtis Collier described the language that Mark Hazelwood used as “vile, despicable, inflammatory racial epithets.” He also said that Hazelwood “disparaged” Cleveland and its football team. Pilot/Flying J CEO and owner Jimmy Haslam, brother of Gov. Bill Haslam, is also owner of the Cleveland Browns football team. Jimmy Haslam has not been charged in the case. The trial of the company’s former executives and sales people is currently in a recess until January 8.
