JUDGE SENTENCES MAN IN PUTNAM COUNTY FOR VEHICULAR HOMICIDE IN DEATH OF CHILD

A judge in Putnam County sentenced a man from New Mexico to prison Monday (October 28, 2019) for vehicular homicide.

Officers took 20-year-old Richard Collins into custody following an accident back in April 2017. Troopers say a 2015 Mitsubishi driven by Collins was traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 40 at the 285 mile marker in Putnam County when he struck the rear of a 2008 Honda CRV driven by 48-year-old Lorena D. Nathan of Charlestown, West Virginia. The impact caused Nathans vehicle to roll several times. A passenger in Nathans vehicle, 5-year-old Oliver Benjamin Nathan-Dugan from Denver, Colorado, was ejected from the car during the rollovers. The boy was pronounced deceased at Cookeville Regional Hospital. Lorena Nathan was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries. Collins was not hurt in the crash.

In court this week, a judge gave Richard Collins seven years to serve in prison.
