KINGSTON WATER BOARD REMOVES CHARGES FOR UNCONNECTED RESIDENTS

The Kingston Water Board met after the Tuesday city council meeting, drawing a significant crowd concerned about a sewer fee charged to residents not connected to the sewer system. The fee, based on a percentage of water bills, stemmed from a 1990s Tennessee law allowing charges for properties with sewer lines nearby, even if unconnected.
After hearing from affected customers, the board voted to eliminate the ordinance entirely. Kingston is among the few water boards to remove this fee for customers outside city limits.
Last year, the board placed a moratorium on the fee for 18 months while unsuccessfully seeking state law changes. The decision to permanently remove the fee was met with appreciation from attendees.
