KNOX COUNTY D.A. NOT RELEASING AUSTIN-EAST BODY CAMERA VIDEO UNTIL INVESTIGATION COMPLETE

Knox County District Attorney Charme Allen said today body camera video recorded during an officer-involved fatal shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School this past Monday will be released at an appropriate time.

Allen said the video “has to complete its function as criminal evidence” before it can even be considered for release.

“Before anything is released, I would sit with that family, talk with that family, and let them view that video in the privacy of my office as many times as they wish before that video is released to the public,” Allen said.

Allen said her priority is to protect the criminal potential of the case and her office “has to protect the due process of law.” According to Allen, the video footage will be released at some point, but it must be done “at the appropriate time.”

Authorities say 17-year-old Anthony J. Thompson, Jr died after he being shot in a confrontation with Knoxville Police officers inside a school bathroom. Police say Thompson, who was armed, did not come out when asked. Police went in and there was a struggle. A school resource officer was wounded by a gunshot, which the TBI now says did not come from the student’s gun

Earlier this week, Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon had asked for the body camera video to be released but was denied by the district attorney.

Four officers in the incident are now on administrative leave. They include Officer Adam Willson, Lieutenant Stanley Cash, Officer Jonathon Clabough and Officer Brian Baldwin.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation continues to look into the shooting.
