KNOX COUNTY SHERIFF WARNS OF ‘GHOST TAP’ SCAM

From the Knox County Sheriff’s Office:
SCAM ALERT: “Ghost Tap” Credit Card Fraud
Since August 2024, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office Organized Retail Crime Unit, part of the NARC (Narcotics and Retail Crime) Division, has been investigating a nationwide trend known as “Ghost Tap.”
Our detectives have apprehended more than 10 suspects—primarily Chinese nationals—who are committing large-scale credit card fraud using third-party digital wallet apps. These criminal groups are traveling from California, New York, and Texas, exploiting jurisdictions they believe won’t recognize their scheme.
🔍 How it works:
Stolen credit card info is loaded into a digital wallet and used to buy gift cards, which are then resold on online platforms to launder the stolen money. Financial institutions are losing millions of dollars weekly to this scam.
📲 If you’re getting text messages about unpaid tolls, misdelivered packages, or account issues, DO NOT click or enter your info. These are part of a real-time smishing scam used to steal your personal and financial information.
✅ Tips to protect yourself:
• Never share personal or financial info via text or email with unknown senders.
• Law enforcement or government agencies will never ask you to pay debts with gift cards or request private info over the phone.
• Report suspicious messages immediately.
Our Organized Retail Crime Unit uses advanced technology to track and apprehend these criminals as soon as they enter our jurisdiction. We remain committed to protecting the financial well-being of Knox County residents.
