KNOXVILLE FIREFIGHTER CATCHES INFANT THROWN FROM BURNING BUILDING

A Knoxville firefighter has been credited with making a “once-in-a-lifetime” catch of a baby thrown from a burning building. The Knoxville News-Sentinel reported that crews were dispatched to the Magnolia Apartment Complex on East Magnolia Ave. Sunday for a fire in a stairwell. When he arrived, Firefighter Eric “Bo” Merritt saw people yelling for help surrounded by thick, black smoke. He also noted a man holding an infant at a third floor window that had smoke pouring from it. Merritt decided that, before the ladders were extended, instead of breathing the smoke, it would be best for the man to immediately drop the child and let him catch him. After a few seconds of consideration, the man released the infant, who was caught by Merritt some 30 feet below. The child was fine, and his mother was deeply grateful to Merritt for his miraculous rescue. Picture courtesy of Knoxville News-Sentinel.
