KNOXVILLE MAN ORDERED TO UNDERGO MENTAL-HEALTH EVALUATION

A man charged with terrorism and assault earlier this year has been ordered to undergo a mental-health evaluation. According to police, 40-year-old Agey C. Stamey II of Knoxville was acting erratically, and began fighting with officers who approached him January 12. He was reportedly carrying a pole and a box cutter.

Taken to Methodist Medical Center’s emergency room, Stamey threatened to return with dynamite and a shotgun and blow up the hospital and shoot everyone inside.

Stamey’s first evaluation was ordered in January. At a February appointment at Ridgeview, officials recommended he be referred to Chattanooga’s Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute for further evaluation.

This appointment, said to be scheduled for April 19, is expected to determine Stamey’s competency to stand trial and assess his mental condition at the time of the crime.

Stamey was charged with one count of commission of an act of terrorism and two counts of assault. He has been in custody at the Anderson County Jail since his arrest.
