KNOXVILLE POLICE LIEUTENANT TRAGICALLY DROWNS ON HUNTING TRIP
Lieutenant Gordon Gwathney, a beloved member of the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) since 1997, tragically drowned on Sunday during a hunting trip in North Dakota, as reported by KPD.
Known affectionately as “Officer G,” Gwathney was celebrated for his friendly, approachable, and caring nature, building strong community ties, particularly during his time as the first-ever School Resource Officer at Austin-East High School.
He rose through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 2003 and a lieutenant in 2010, and was honored as KPD’s Officer of the Year in 2013. Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon emphasized his lasting impact as a dedicated officer who genuinely connected with those he served. Funeral arrangements for Gwathney are pending and will be announced soon.
