KROGER TO CLOSE AROUND 60 STORES OVER THE NEXT 18 MONTHS
Kroger plans to close about 60 stores across the U.S. over the next 18 months to streamline operations and improve efficiency, as announced in its June 2025 earnings report. The closures, which incurred a $100 million impairment charge, are expected to yield a modest financial benefit. Affected employees will be offered roles at other stores.
The decision follows a pause in store evaluations during a failed $24.6 billion merger attempt with Albertsons, blocked by a federal judge in December for likely reducing competition and raising prices. Despite the closures, Kroger’s adjusted first-quarter sales grew 3.7% to $45.12 billion.
Specific store locations targeted for closure were not disclosed.
