LAWMAKER SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD WORK FOR SNAP BENEFITS

Food Stamps, otherwise known as SNAP benefits, have been in the news lately as a Tennessee lawmaker attempted to introduce legislation to change the types of food that can be purchased with them. Now another state politician says he wants recipients of the benefits to be required to work for them. Rep. Micah Van Huss has filed a bill where those receiving SNAP would have to do so many hours of work doing community service, take an employment class or actively seek employment for 20 hours a week unless exemptions, such as having an infant or being unable to work, were applied. Huss says that “it’s important for people to receive help through the program temporarily, if they need it. But if they can work, they should.”
