LAWMAKERS SLATED TO PROPOSE CHANGES TO GOVERNOR’S GAS TAX HIKE BILL
Tuesday, legislators will attempt to remove a proposed gas tax hike from Gov. Bill Haslam’s plan to provide funding for transportation projects. The bill will appear before a key House committee and the change is supported by Republican House Speaker Beth Harwell. New language on the bill would instead withdraw the needed funding from sales tax money collected through the purchase of new and used vehicles. It would also create new taxes on electric and hybrid vehicles, and increase registration fees. The new proposal would also do away with suggested tax cuts made by the Governor such as reducing the sales tax on groceries and some corporate taxes.
