MAN AIMS PISTOL AT DEPUTY DURING HIGH SPEED CHASE IN WHITE COUNTY

White County, TN– On January 8, 2023, just before 4 PM, Deputy Bullard and Deputy Sparks attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a dark-colored Chevy Malibu on Duck Pond Road for a traffic violation. The driver failed to stop and sped off at a high rate of speed, leading deputies at over 100 mph on multiple county and state roads. Major John Meadows was notified of the pursuit heading in his direction and set up spikes for the vehicle near Smithville Hwy and Hutchings College Road. It was successful by hitting the driver’s side front and back tires disabling the vehicle to a slower speed. The vehicle continued westbound on Smithville Hwy near Griffintown Road, where Deputy Brandon Bean attempted to get in front of the driver’s vehicle. At that time, the driver pointed a stainless and black pistol out of the driver’s window toward Deputy Brandon Bean. With no regard for public safety, the driver proceeded on Peeled Chestnut Road, John Kirby Loop, and Old Smithville Highway running through numerous stop signs at high rates of speed with only 2 wheels and tires. The vehicle continued to Old Kentucky Road and Old Smithville Hwy when he lost control and exited the vehicle on foot. After a brief foot pursuit, deputies caught up with the driver, who was identified as Charles Wilmoth. He was arrested without incident. Deputies collaborated throughout the investigation to find the pistol that Mr. Wilmoth had aimed at Deputy Bean while pursuing him. The pistol was located on the left side of Peeled Chestnut Road which matched the description that had been pointed at Deputy Bean. The pistol was logged into evidence. Observed in plain view in the vehicle was a green leafy substance that is believed to be marijuana, glass pipes, electronic scales, baggies, mobile phones, residue-filled containers, and an extra magazine with ammunition that matched the weapon that deputies recovered. Mr. Wilmoth was found in possession of a green powdery substance believed to be fentanyl and a large amount of cash. All items were taken in as evidence and seized as part of the ongoing investigation. Mr. Wilmoth was booked into the White County Jail and charged with:
  • Felony evading arrest in a motor vehicle
  • Evading Arrest
  • Felony possession of scheduled VI drugs

Mr. Wilmoth’s bond was set at $150,000 and will appear in General Sessions Court on January 10, 2023, at 9:00 a.m.
