MAN CLAIMS COUPLE STEALS CAR AFTER HE PICKED THEM UP

On Wednesday, Cumberland County deputies responded to a report about a stolen vehicle on HWY 70 East. Upon arrival, they met up with Craig Smith who stated he went to pick up some friends on Peavine Road. Smith told deputies he did not know much about his friends, except their names are David and Kacie. He claimed when he picked them up, that David acted like he had a gun and made him load all of Kacie’s clothes in the car. They left the house and Craig said they made him get out of the car around the 13000 block on HWY 70E. He claims he exited the car and started walking down the Highway because he was afraid they were going to kill him if he didn’t. Craig said his phone was left in the car so he flagged down a random car and was able to call 911. Craig told deputies he did not want to press any charges, and that he only wanted to get his car back.

He was unable to provide the deputies with phone numbers for the occupants in the vehicle, their last names, or where they would be headed. He also changed his story numerous times. He told deputies multiple times how he did not want to press charges for fear of them burning his car.

Dispatched notified Roane County due to the vehicle leaving in that direction. Roane County deputies were able to locate the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop where they found David Mayse and Kacie Hughes as the occupants in the vehicle. After Cumberland County deputies took Craig to his car, Kacie unloaded all her belongings from the vehicle. However, she reloaded everything back in the vehicle when Craig told her he would give her a ride. David Mayse was detained and transported to intake for three outstanding warrants out of Cumberland County.
