A Maryville woman that has been charged in connection with a murder investigation appeared in court for the first time Monday. Karen Walker Headrick is charged with criminal homicide and abuse of a corpse. Human remains were discovered outside of her home near Butterfly Gap Loop. Family members say they believe the remains are that of Headrick’s mother Mary Ruth Walker who has been missing for several weeks. They say that the two have had a rocky relationship that included violent confrontations that resulted in Walker filing an order of protection against her daughter in 2012. An autopsy was completed over the weekend but investigators have not released the identity of the remains. Headrick is scheduled to appear in court on July 10 in Blount County.
