MCMINN COUNTY INMATE CHARGED IN BEATING DEATH OF FELLOW INMATE
Special Agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation say an inmate who was beaten in the McMinn County Jail Saturday night has died from his injuries. The TBI, says at the request of 10th District Attorney General Stephen Crump, the investigation started in the booking area of the jail located in Athens. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that 24-year-old Jerrod Ivan Jones assaulted the other inmate who was not named. Spokesman Josh DeVine says in addition to being charged with aggravated assault, agents have secured an additional charge of 2nd degree murder for Jones, who remains in the custody of the McMinn County Jail. DeVine says an autopsy will be conducted.
