MEGA-SCHOOL PROPOSAL BACK BEFORE ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION AGAIN

After a 30-day postponement, the Roane County Commission will again be asked to vote Monday night on approval of the school board’s latest school-consolidation plan for Rockwood, Harriman and Kingston high schools. The planned 1800-student mega school is proposed to be built on the Baker-Hamilton property across from the Roane County Park on Highway 70, at a price of some $67.4 million. In addition, $7.1 million was approved for renovations at the Oliver Springs Middle and High schools, bringing the total to $73 million. The projected tax rate increase for citizens of the county would be an estimated $0.23, according to figures provided by the County Executive’s budget office.

If approved, the plan calls for the renovation of Rockwood High School, making it ready for the Ridgeview Elementary School students who would go there, and the current Ridgeview property would go up for sale. Harriman High would also be renovated for middle-school students, and the Roane County High School facility in Kingston  would be put up for sale; however, the football field and field house would not be included. Last month County Commissioner Junior Hendrickson asked the commission to vote on the proposed plan as it was previously, with revenue from sales of the  school properties going back into the general-fund debt service. Monday night’s meeting gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Roane County Commission meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse in Kingston.
