MEMPHIS CONFEDERATE STATUES REMOVED

For years, Confederate statues have been a part of Memphis Park and the Health Sciences Park but no more. The statues of Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest were removed by Wednesday night. The move was fully approved by the city council at a meeting Wednesday. The city sold both parks to nonprofit organization Memphis Greenspace, Inc. for $1,000 each. Immediately after the purchase, the statues of Davis, who was the President of the Confederacy, and Forrest, who is known for his involvement with the KKK, were removed. For months, the city of Memphis has looked into multiple ways to remove the statues. City leaders explored all legal options and even took their case to the state of Tennessee. Wednesday night, they decided to use a so-called “legal loophole” that allowed them to remove the statues right away. Some opponents of the issue, such as the Sons of Confederate Veterans, say that the council is breaking the law and that there will be repercussions.
