NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF/WVLT) – A Metro Nashville Police officer’s body was recovered from the Cumberland River after he went missing Thursday while attempting to save a woman, WTVF reports.

Authorities received reports that a 40-year-old woman was contemplating suicide at the end of a boat ramp at Peeler Park at 4 a.m. Thursday in Madison.

Officials told WTVF that officers tried to talk her out of the car, but the car rolled backwards down the ramp. The two responding officers attempted to get the woman out of the car and fell when the car went under water.

WTVF said one officer tried saving the other officer, but was unsuccessful. That officer was transported to a Nashville area hospital for treatment.

The missing officer was last seen at 4:40 a.m., 50-60 yards from the boat ramp. Authorities said the water is 15-feet deep in the area and about 49 degrees.

Metro Nashville Police tweeted at around 9:15 a.m. that the body of the missing officer was recovered by a diver with the fire department.

The police department identified the officer as Eric Mumaw, 44, an 18-year Metro Nashville Police Department veteran in a tweet at 9:24 a.m.

The woman was found along the river bank and taken to an area hospital about an hour after the initial incident.

Multiple units and rescue boats searched the river bank Thursday morning.
