MINOR TRAIN DERAILMENT REPORTED IN MORGAN COUNTY, NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE
A minor train derailment occurred in Morgan County on Friday evening, resulting in no reported injuries or property damage, according to local officials.
Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Wren confirmed that a single train engine partially left the tracks in the Oakdale area. The engine did not overturn, and no additional railcars were derailed. Crews at the scene are currently waiting for a crane to arrive to lift the engine back onto the tracks.
This minor mishap follows a much more severe derailment in Morgan County on June 11 involving 29 rail cars. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), that previous incident led to the release of an estimated 107,000 gallons of alcohol, with Norfolk Southern estimating the total damage at approximately $5.3 million.
A contact advisory for the nearby Emory River, which was issued by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation following the June 11 crash, was lifted on June 24. While local reports indicated dead fish floating in the river, an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report released on June 25 clarified that the fish kills appear to be linked to low dissolved oxygen levels rather than chemical toxicity.
