MONROE COUNTY HOUSE FIRE UNDER INVESTIGATION BY KY STATE POLICE

TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WSMV) – A house fire is under investigation after an 8-month-old died and a 2-year-old was severely burned in Monroe County on Monday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.

Officers responded to a call at about 1 p.m. of a house fire in the limits of Tompkinsville.

The fire occurred on West 6th Street and multiple first-responding agencies worked the incident. Preliminary investigation shows that 25-year-old Ashton Wright was asleep and woke up to her house full of smoke.

Wright’s two children (8-month-old and 2-year-old) were also in the home. The mother, with the assistance of a neighbor was able to get one of her children out of the home, however, they were unable to reach her other child.

KSP reports that firefighters made entry into the home and found the 8-month-old baby dead. Meanwhile, the toddler was taken to a local hospital for treatment of severe burns.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have originated from an electric space heater inside the residence however, the incident remains under investigation,” KSP said.
