Local first responders, veterans, and community members united this morning to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Organized by the Monterey Police Department, the Monterey Fire Department, Putnam County EMS, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the morning’s remembrance drew a crowd of approximately 150 participants. Students and families from Burks Elementary School, Monterey High School JROTC cadets, local veterans, and retired first responders walked alongside city officials, including the Monterey City Administrator and members of the Board of Aldermen.

The procession began at the Monterey Depot flagpole and concluded at Burks Elementary School. Upon arrival, an honor guard of Monterey Police officers performed a formal flag-retirement ceremony, presenting a fresh American flag to the school’s principal and assistant principal.

Today’s observance also marked a dual milestone for Burks Elementary, which officially opened its doors on September 11, 2001. Organizers expressed gratitude to the Monterey Senior Center for providing transportation support, ensuring attendees could safely return to their vehicles following the procession.
