MONTEREY COUPLE CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE AFTER FENTANYL OVERDOSE REVIVAL AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING

Monterey Police officers revived an unresponsive woman with two doses of Narcan on Friday, June 26, after responding to a residence for a medical emergency. The woman, identified as Mary Kathryne Swafford, had no pulse and was not breathing when officers arrived. She regained a pulse and began breathing on her own following administration of the opioid overdose reversal drug.

While officers provided life-saving care, an investigation revealed that Swafford and Cameron Shane Clegg had been using fentanyl. During the response, Clegg allegedly attempted to hide drug paraphernalia under a mattress where a small child was sitting.

Officers later obtained consent to search the home and recovered multiple items of drug paraphernalia and materials with drug residue. The Department of Children’s Services (DCS) responded to the scene and removed the child from the home, placing the minor in the care of another individual.

Both Swafford and Clegg were charged with Child Abuse. Clegg faces an additional charge of Tampering with Evidence.
