MORE DETAILS ON COFFEE COUNTY SHOOTING INVOLVING 2 DEPUTIES

Final details on the shooting of two deputies in Coffee County have been released. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirms that two Coffee County Deputies were injured in a shooting incident at the courthouse Monday afternoon. Authorities say that a prisoner, 37-year-old Michael Bell, was there for a hearing. Afterward, Deputy Wade Bassett went to a third floor area where Bell was being held to transport him back to the jail. Bell then reportedly attacked the deputy. Bell was able to grab the deputy’s gun, shooting him in the abdomen. Deputy Bassett was wearing a bullet-proof vest. As Bell fled the building, he shot a second deputy, Wendell Bowen. TBI Director Mark Gwyn said Bell entered a home before exiting out the back and going into the yard of a neighboring home. That was where officials said he fatally shot himself in the head. Both deputies and the shooter were taken to the hospital. Deputy Bowen underwent surgery. Deputy Bassett was later transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center from Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. While the extent of the deputy’s injuries were not available, both were listed in stable condition.
