MORE INFORMATION RELEASED REGARDING VEHICLE VS. PEDESTRIAN INCIDENT IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department released more information this morning regarding a man struck by a vehicle in Lake Tansi last Friday.

The arrest report states a Dodge Dart driven by 55-year-old Susan Denise Stokes of Crossville struck Gary Phillips then fled the scene. Stokes was later pulled over and taken into custody near the intersection of Highway 70 East and Peavine Road.

The victim, bleeding from his arms, legs and shoulders, told officers he and Stokes stopped at a home to see a relative of his when an argument broke out. Stokes reportedly went outside, got into the vehicle and drove into the yard attempting to hit Phillips after he came out of the dwelling. Phillips started to run but was hit by the car knocking him out of his shoes. Phillips was able to get up and ran into a nearby wooded area. He came out of the woods on Natchez Trace and walked down the road. That is when Stokes attempted to strike him again with the Dodge. Phillips ran back into the tree area and told Stokes he was not going with her. The victim told deputies Stokes maneuvered the car a couple of times to try to hit him again but eventually gave up and left.

Phillips flagged down a citizen driving down the road and was able to call 911.

Stokes was charged with aggravated assault and she initially refused to sign bond conditions at the jail.
