A multi-agency team successfully rescued an injured man from rugged terrain along the Caney Fork River at Rock Island State Park on September 16, 2026.

The victim, who suffered a leg injury after falling on rocks, was located in an area made even more grueling by a heat index hovering in the mid-to-upper 90s. Despite the challenging conditions, a coordinated team of park rangers, local volunteer fire departments, the rescue squad, emergency management, and EMS personnel navigated the difficult landscape.

Rescuers carefully carried the patient up to the trail, placed him in a wheeled litter, and transferred him to awaiting EMS personnel. The entire operation was completed in just over one hour and fifteen minutes.

Local emergency officials highlighted the successful operation as a prime example of seamless interagency cooperation. In the wake of the rescue, the Sparta-White County Volunteer Rescue Squad is encouraging community members interested in making a difference to step forward, noting that training is available for new volunteers.
