MULTIPLE REPORTS OF XFINITY SCAMS IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY
Multiple police reports have been reported due to a scam involving Xfinity and Target.
In one case, a woman stated she received a call in regards to a new promotion from Xfinity stating she could pay $100, instead of her regular $200 for the next two years. Since this would cut her bill in half, she called the number back and they told her to pay her current bill. Then, they advised her that she needed to buy Target gift cards since Xfinity is joining in a promotion with them. The victim was told all the money she was using will be going toward her account.
After going to two separate stores, and purchasing $1,200 in gift cards, a cashier at Lowe’s advised her to call Xfinity directly to see if she was being scammed. When the victim spoke with Xfinity, they told her there was no such promo and that she was in fact, being scammed.
The victim even told police that the scammers had shown her a page on her TV, where her balance had been paid for the month, but when speaking with Xfinity, he told her that her balance was still $200.
Since the woman gave the scammers all the gift card information, she is at a loss of $1,200.
If a communication, whether it be an email, text message, or phone call claiming to be from Comcast or Xfinity, seems suspicious in asking for payment or personal information, hang up or do not reply and find the correct number to dial.
Scammers can also manipulate caller IDs to make people believe the call is from a legitimate company (including Comcast or Xfinity).
