MURDERER GETS 33 YEARS TO SERVE IN DOUBLE HOMICIDE

Lonnie Wright was sentenced today by Roane County Criminal Court Judge Jeff Wicks to 33 years for the murders of Steve Groover and Cindy Scruggs at Groover’s home on Buck Creek Road in May 2022. Judge Wicks agreed with the District Attorney’s request to give Wright the maximum number of years with his sentence and ran three six-year sentences consecutively with the maximum of 15 years on the attempted robbery conviction. Wright has been in jail since his arrest. He will receive credit for the he has time served. Multiple family members gave victim impact statements to help ADA Bob Edwards and ADA Jonathan Edwards make their point that Wright’s lengthy criminal history made him deserving of the sentence, impressing the Judge that Wright remains a threat to the community.
Wright was found guilty of multiple counts after a jury trial.
