NEW TENNESSEE LAW TO REQUIRE PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP OR LAWFUL PRESENCE FOR MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION

Beginning January 1, 2027, Tennessee will enforce a new requirement mandating that applicants seeking initial registrations for certain motor vehicles provide official documentation of their legal status.
Under the new law, applicants must prove they fall into one of the following categories:
  • U.S. citizen
  • Lawful permanent resident of the United States
  • An individual whose presence in the United States has been authorized by the federal government for a specific purpose and a specified period of authorized stay
State officials note that the requirement applies specifically to initial registrations for applicable motor vehicles.
