NEWLY PROPOSED TENNESSEE SENATE BILL TARGETS REPEAT DUI OFFENDERS

State Senator Todd Gardenhire of Chattanooga is trying to stop repeat DUI offenders with his new bill, SB 683, which would impose tougher penalties for impaired drivers caught more than once.

Under the proposed bill, drivers would spend a minimum of 11 months and 29 days in prison for a second DUI charge.

Current state law provides for anywhere from 45 days to 11 months in jail.

Gardenhire said if SB 683 becomes law, it would cost the state $44 million per year.
