NONPROFIT PETITIONS TO ELIMINATE STATE GROCERY TAX

In Tennessee, one of 13 states with a grocery tax, residents often shop in Georgia, where groceries are 4.1% cheaper, causing local stores like Linda’s Produce in Harrison to lose customers. A non-profit, Job Justice Organizer, is petitioning to eliminate the 4% state grocery tax, arguing it would ease financial burdens on families amid rising costs.
The petition has over 1,200 signatures. State Representative Aftyn Behn, who proposed the bill, suggests closing corporate tax loopholes to offset lost revenue. Local grocer Mark Ramey supports the tax removal, noting it would help the community and his business, which has operated for 22 years despite slim margins.
