NOW THAT SCHOOLS ARE BACK IN SESSION, KNOW THE LAW ON BUS SAFETY
Area commuters are once again encountering school buses, picking up or dropping off students. If you are a driver approaching a stopped bus, with red lights flashing and the stop sign activated, here’s what the law requires:
• On a two-lane highway everyone stops.
• On a four-lane highway with a center turn lane everyone stops.
• If a four-lane highway has a physical divider, such as a guardrail, a grassy median, or other unpaved area at least 5 feet wide, traffic in the opposite direction can proceed with caution. Only traffic behind the bus must stop.
Also, use caution as there are many school zones in our area that have reduced speed requirements.
