OAK RIDGE CITY OFFICIALS WARN RESIDENTS OF “SPOOFING” SCAM
Officials with the City of Oak Ridge are warning residents against calls from a local number with a “425-” prefix and a caller ID title of “CITY OF OAK RIDGE.” One of the numbers used in the scam is 865-425-1892. When answered, this number replies with a recorded message saying the person has won a trip or prize of some sort.
The City of Oak Ridge said they are not behind the calls, but rather a scam that uses “spoofing” software. The software tricks people by letting the caller change their caller ID to any message or originating title they choose.
A release from the City of Oak Ridge said anyone who receives these calls should hang up immediately.
