OFF-DUTY FIREFIGHTER SAVES WOMAN FROM BURNING CAR, THEN HIT IN PARKING MISHAP
On Tuesday evening around 7:30, off-duty Roane County firefighter Joshua Taylor was driving out of Oak Ridge when he spotted a car on fire at the Nebraska Road intersection. He parked behind another vehicle already at the scene, rushed to the burning car, and found a woman trapped inside with the door locked.
Using his elbow to shatter the driver’s side window, Taylor unlocked the door and pulled her to safety just as Oak Ridge Fire Department and police arrived to extinguish the blaze, which caused substantial damage to the vehicle. The woman was unharmed. As Taylor prepared to leave, he learned that Steve Mead, who had been assisting at the scene, accidentally backed into Taylor’s pickup truck, damaging the bumper and front end.
The two exchanged information to avoid an immediate police report and initially agreed Mead would pay for repairs, but a subsequent phone conversation between Taylor, Mead, and Mead’s wife went poorly, prompting Taylor to file a police report for the damage. No further details are available about the woman in the vehicle.
