A packed house gathered at Oliver Springs City Hall last Thursday evening for a nearly two-hour joint meeting of the Oliver Springs Board of Aldermen and Water Board. The session covered a mix of community milestones, local governance, and ongoing debates over town property.

Honoring Decades of Public Service

The evening began on a celebratory note as local officials recognized two longstanding public servants for their extensive contributions to the community:

• Jeff Burum: Received a formal proclamation and resolution honoring his more than 45 years of dedicated service to the Oliver Springs Water Department.

• Ramona Walker: The Town Council passed a resolution honoring the elected City Treasurer upon her retirement after 28 years of faithful service.

In another tribute, city leaders officially approved the renaming of Redbud Park to James Brummett Memorial Park.

Depot Ownership Sparks Debate

Tensions arose during a discussion regarding the historic Depot building, which currently houses the Oliver Springs Public Library. The debate—a topic of contention for several months—centers on governance and ownership:

• The Historical Society: Contends they should hold sole authority over what is placed in or removed from the historic site.

• City Officials: Maintain that the Town of Oliver Springs owns the building and reserves the right to allow the library to operate on the premises.

Next Steps: Both parties agreed to hand the matter over to their respective attorneys to review legal records and determine ownership and authority. A formal decision is expected within the next several weeks.

New Park Fees Approved for 2027

Following roughly 40 minutes of debate, the Board of Aldermen passed an ordinance introducing a new fee schedule for the use of Arrowhead Park and other municipal amenities.

Under the new regulations, users will be required to submit formal applications and, for certain events and rentals, provide proof of insurance. To allow residents and local organizations time to adapt to the new requirements, the ordinance will not take effect until January 2027.
