PHONE SCAMS CONTINUE TO TARGET THE ELDERLY IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

Another elderly citizen of Cumberland County was targeted by a phone scammer this week. An 86-year-old female told the sheriff’s department she got a call from someone claiming to be from “Publisher’s Clearinghouse” advising her she won 5 million dollars and a new Mercedes vehicle. She was instructed to go to a store and purchase two $200 Ebay cards then call them back with the card numbers to claim her prize. The victim gave one of the card numbers to the scammer before a family member realized what was happening and stopped her. The call came from Brentwood, New York.

In the other phone scam this week, a caller stated a cash rebate of $3,000 would be given to a victim in his late 70’s for the purchase of a home computer 4 to 5 years ago. The scammer then gained access to the victim’s computer and placed an application on his screen for him to fill out. The victim was then instructed to go buy four Walmart gift cards for $500 each to cover processing. The victim then gave the scammer the numbers off the gift cards.

Police remind citizens to not fall for scams of this nature.
