Local law enforcement is investigating the theft of $3,590 reported on Sunday, September 6, at a residence on Evelyn Ave.

The victim told the Crossville Police Department that she had recently been released from the Cumberland County Jail on August 25 and recovered funds previously seized during her arrest, which were determined to be her income tax return rather than proceeds from criminal activity. The victim successfully cashed the check.

According to the police report filed by MPO Justin Farmer, the victim was resting in a recliner with her purse—containing the cash—hanging on a nearby rocking chair. A visitor arrived at the home and remained for up to two hours. The victim stated that the visitor approached her purse and began going through it, claiming he was searching for a light when questioned.

She discovered the money missing roughly twenty to thirty minutes after the visitor departed. Another occupant present at the home reported seeing or hearing nothing suspicious. Authorities noted that no video surveillance footage is available, and officers have been unable to reach the visitor for questioning.

Verification of the check’s validity was delayed due to the holiday weekend, with police following up with the Sheriff’s Department as county offices reopened.
