PROPOSED SHOOTING SPORTS PARK HOT TOPIC AT CROSSVILLE CITY COUNCIL MEETING

It was a standing-room-only crowd at Tuesday night’s Crossville City Council meeting with most of those attendees interested in the Shooting Sports Park contract. Last month, the council contracted with Crossville Shooting Park Inc, a non-profit that would oversee the running of the proposed park, for a parcel of land at the site of the old landfill on Albert Frye Rd. Property owners in that area have raised concerns that the park would disturb their “way of life”. During the community comment part of the meeting, parties that were against the park and those for the park presented viewpoints. Crossville Mayor James Mayberry then moved the subject to the forefront of the meeting. Those “against” presented a petition with 34 names and asked that the council consider moving the park’s location. Concerns raised included noise from those shooting at the park and de-valuation of property. Those “for” said that the TWRA grant for construction of the park was locked into that location, and made cases that the park would be an economic boon to the county and would be a great benefit to those kids that compete in tournaments. They also presented a petition with 382 signatures. A motion was then made by Mayor Pro Tem JH Graham to have the non-profit hold a public hearing with the property holders within 30-60 days which would hold things up with the contract which has a time threshold of Dec. 31. Council Member Danny Wyatt said that he had wished such a meeting was held beforehand and he apologized that he had not investigated the matter further. Council Member Pamela Harris stated that, although she approved of the shooting park, she wanted to be fair with everyone. Attorney Randal Boston spoke on behalf of being a member of the non-profit and not legal representation. He told the council that time is of the essence to get the TWRA grant and that there was a legal contract. He said that the issue had been well publicized since mid-2015, and that the non-profit had done everything required of it. The motion passed 4-1. Boston told 1057 News that “I’m just here for the kids that compete. We have a contract.”
