PROTEST OF NATHAN B. FORREST BUST MADE DURING NEW HOUSE SPEAKER CEREMONY
The recent swearing in of the Tennessee General Assembly’s new Speaker did not go without controversy. This week, 25th District Representative Cameron Sexton became the new Speaker of the House. Following the ceremony, a protestor began shouting in the State Capital for “the removal of the bust of Nathan Forrest from the Capital”. He also called for the removal of all symbols of White Supremacy from the building. The man stood in front of the confederate leader’s bust while chanting over and over. This was not the first such protest concerning the bust or other like-statues. Last month, Gov. Bill Lee was criticized for his signing of a proclamation designating July 13th as “Nathan Bedford Forrest Day” in Tennessee, which was in accordance with state law.
