PUBLISHERS CLEARINGHOUSE SCAM ALERT
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department has been alerted to another potential scam being perpetrated against unsuspecting local residents. Recently, an elderly woman reported she’d received a text supposedly from a friend in New York saying she’d won $200,000 from Publishers Clearinghouse and urging her to apply so she could be eligible to win money.
When the woman was communicating with what she thought was Publishers Clearinghouse via text, they started asking for personal information: name, birthdate, marital status and whether she had a bank account. The woman said she did not provide any information.
The sheriff’s department reminds residents not to divulge any personal information to anyone not personally known to them, whether via phone, text or email.
