PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WARNS OF BLACKMAIL SCAM

The PCSO has been informed of another scam. This specific scam consists of someone claiming to have your personal internet browsing history and that they have accessed your camera in your phone and have downloaded pornographic images of you. The scammer then threatens to send that image to all your contacts if you do not send them money within the next 24 hours. THIS IS A SCAM.
Some reminders to avoid scams:
• Always call your Putnam County Sheriff’s Office before sending money or revealing any personal information.
• Scammers tend to include your phone number and/or address as a scare tactic, even though it is public information.
• Majority of scams ask for Bitcoin as a payment. Scammers try to receive Bitcoin so they can receive large sums of money without a trace back to them.
• Do not respond to unknown numbers or emails.
Sheriff Farris wants you to know that if you are ever in doubt, hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office. We are here to help.
